The Wonder of What Walks on Water. Never have I ever!

What is delighting you?

I like to remind myself I can feel it all---life's joys and sorrows and moments of tiny awe. Here is a little one made a bit longer.

Perhaps it will bring a squirm of delight or perk a fond memory of a summer day or bring you a particular flavor all your own of pleasure. Eeking towards the wonder of the world.

Walking on Water

Jesus walked on water.

So I’ve been told.

Didn’t witness that one.

Yesterday.

Actually it was Friday.

I was sitting on a rocky beach

By the dark green river I had recently jumped in
And swam till I was shivery and peppered with goosebumps.

As I dripped water and

Let the golden sunshines warmth climb into my limbs

I felt something brushing my right calf.

I nosed my face down and glimpsed

A black and gold striped caterpillar was moseying up my leg.

It tickled and pressed my pale skin.

I picked them up between with my thumb and index finger and set

Them down beside me.

I watched them come towards me again and as they lifted their head to climb, once again onto my foot, I scooched a bit moving both my legs out of their path.

They paused momentarily.

And then directed their body on over the scattering of dusty brown and gray pebbles and rocks, towards the slow moving water.

Low and behold.

And shiver me timber,

never have I ever,

seen a caterpillar step

onto a body of water

and walk.

Not till this very moment in time.

Shimmery rippling water, fuzzy caterpillar

inching their multiple legged body

On TOP.

Skimming the surface so gracefully

my heart flipped.

I think my mouth dropped and an “Oh” released itself.

I felt a clutch of delight and terror at the same time.

In a rush of wonder I pondered---

Are they going to drown?

Is that the purpose?

Is this an evolutionary step?

Do caterpillars do this regularly?

Maybe I should save them?

Would I be saving them, or getting in the way?

Some part of me doubted their capacity to stay on top. I couldn’t just let them drown themselves could I? I decided I’d take them out once. I apologized for my interference as I reached in and plucked them carefully out onto the beach again.

We sat there together. Still. For a moment or two.

Then they began inching towards the water

Tipping themselves over the edge of a

Rounded lime green lichen covered rock and walked onto the river water.

Again.

I stared with wonder and a dose of awe as their tiny legs maneuvered down the river.

On top of the water.

Its own life raft.

Never have I ever.

Jesus did it.

The gold and black fuzzy caterpillar did it.

What do I know?

To momentary pleasure, and wonder at the more than human world!

Big hugs,
