Building trust, communication and relationship takes work and is vital for healthy workplaces. The Wonder upRising facilitation model has been used during staff trainings to foster relationship building, deepen understanding among team members and has sparked changes to organizational values and operational procedures. The process enables various personality types and learning styles to contribute. Time democracy and a listening only framework create trustworthy space for all voices, ideas and beliefs to enter the room.

Along with addressing workplace communication and care, Wonder upRising is also a useful tool for boards looking to connect and get to know one another. It can also be an effective way to connect boards with the people they serve. Facilitation training programs are in place so leaders and team members can lead their organizations in the Stoke Your Woke process. KERR ELEMENTARY SCHOOL, MESA, AZ

Amy Breitenbucher, principal of Kerr Elementary, received a copy of a Stoke your Woke (the original name of Wonder upRising) from her sister-in-law as a holiday gift. After using it as a personal journal and with family members she began to envision the journal as a potentially powerful tool for relationship-building with the adults in her school community. Located in the Phoenix suburb of Mesa, AZ, Kerr Elementary serves a racially and economically diverse population. Acting as a ‘third thing’ to ask evocative questions, Amy envisioned the journal creating a new, engaging way for staff and parents to better understand one another and the community’s diverse perspectives, beliefs and needs.

To support this work, Amy purchased 40 journals and paid to have a staff member trained in the Stoke Your Woke facilitation method. The image above shows the Kerr Elementary staff receiving training in the then “Stoke your Woke” facilitation method.

Carol and Casey were asked to facilitate a two hour session with 22 of Mountain Star Relief Nursery’s administrative staff, support staff and interventionists using a question identified by the organization that was applicable to their work. Mountain Star is a non-profit that works directly with vulnerable families in an effort to keep children in Deschutes, Jefferson, and Crook counties safe from abuse and neglect.

“Our team is so appreciative of this training. All the comments that I received from my staff were positive and how people felt ‘included and valued’. Thank you, Carol and Casey!”
