The R word Unpeeled!

Rituals. with a capital R!

I love them.

My working definition is:

Radical Intention TUnfurl Attentive Living!

Rituals have woven their way into my heart since childhood.

I was raised Catholic. The ritual of slipping my small fingers into the holy water and anointing my chest with the sign of the cross. Whew and wow. I no longer participate in the Catholic religion. And what was born during those years was a love for the sacred woven into everyday moments.

Rituals help me come back to that, again and again.

For instance; my life partner Kevin and I have a 10 minute check-in ritual almost every morning. Taking turns listening to what is up, for each of us, before the fullness of the day starts. We begin with a blessing for the earth, and end with a hug.

It’s been the single most important act we do for our relationship.

Rituals can be full of mystery and magic, fun, play, wonder, the sacred, or?

More than anything they are full of intention and attention.

A few years ago, in a writing class, a memory of my son when he was in elementary school popped into my head.

After picking him up, and dropping off our neighborhood carpoolers, we'd make our way home. A titch tired and in need of sustenance, I would make us a snack; popcorn with nutritional yeast and lots of butter (yummy), or apples and peanut butter. We would then sit at the corner of our wooden dining room table, as the light danced through the west facing windows, and play cards.

Crazy eights, go fish, rat a tat tat, slap jack, or spit. His bright blue eyes lighting up when he won a round!

We’d eat, play, and chat. As the cards flowed so did our conversation. Exchanging our day with each other.

And when the memory popped in a few years ago, I had an aha moment about the importance of that time shared. That ritual set the stage for our long term relationship. Our flow of conversation when we are alone together. The ease and playfulness we share now. Tears slid down my face. What emerged from a simple ritual of playing cards with attention and intention!
